Urban Poverty Alleviation Strategies: A Study of Six Cities

Publisher: Madras School of Economics

This study aims at analyzing the profile and features of urban poverty in these cities with a view to taking these to a slum-free zero-poverty status by 2020. The six cities under study here are: Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Indore, and Guwahati. The key to poverty reduction lies in generating productive employment and improving the skill levels of the poor though the poorest may still need additional welfare measures to be able to participate effectively in the labour market.
