Nutrition in India

Publisher: UNSCN

The report is divided into two parts. The first part comprises a detailed national nutrition situation analysis, with data as far as possible disaggregated by state. In the second part, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu - the two neighbouring South Indian states were chosen for an in-depth review of policies and programmes, with a view to understanding what worked and why in effecting the observed nutritional improvement in these states. The two-tier (Centre and State) system of government with nutrition-relevant actions consequently differing to some degree between states, necessitated such a state-wise analysis to reveal the essential driving forces behind nutritional change. It is hoped that this review would be useful to planners and policy makers to strengthen the ongoing intervention programmes and to mould long-term policies for sustained improvement.
