India’s Right to Food Act: A Novel Approach to Food Security

In 2013, the government of India passed the National Food Security Act, designed to ensure access to adequate food at affordable prices. How well will it work? This chapter examines the strengths and weaknesses of India’s existing foodgrain procurement and distribution system that will be used to implement the act and draws lessons from the food safety net and food subsidy experiences of other countries.
