A Note on the Reliability of Agricultural Wage Data in India: Reconciliation of Monthly AWI Data for District-Level Analysis

Publisher: Review of Agrarian Studies

We present an overview of the limitations of the agricultural wage data published as Agricultural Wages in India (AWI). We discuss the underlying reasons for these limitations and attempt to address the problems. Through controlling for fixed effects associated with reporting centres and farm operations, we show that it is possible to utilise the AWI data as a source of district-level monthly wage variation without discarding districts with frequent missing data. As changes in reporting centres have a large impact on inter-year dynamics of reported district-level wages, we recommend retaining the same reporting centres over several years in order to improve the quality of the AWI.
