Urban Poverty and Health Inequality in India

Publisher: Princeton University

This paper aims to present a nuanced review and analysis of the relationship between urban poverty and poor health – the “urban health penalty” – in India. Health is a vital investment in India's economic and social development; failing to mitigate the growing burden of health inequalities in urban areas will cost both innumerable lives and vast sums of money. It is for these reasons that the burden of disease and its association with poverty, exclusion and deprivation in urban India requires heightened and more detailed attention and action.
