The Role of Agriculture in Poverty Reduction: The Indian Experience

The paper examine the role and implications of agriculture in the country’s poverty alleviation efforts. There are three parts to the analysis. The second section relates to documentation of the major trends in the socio-economic profile and the magnitude of incidence of poverty in India on alternative criteria for measurement. The third section relates to the analysis of empirical evidence on the linkage between agricultural development and poverty reduction in the country. The concluding part identifies agricultural strategies that are conducive to poverty alleviation and the conditions that make their impact most effective.
