Pulses (chickpea, pigeonpea, lentils, urd bean and mung bean) are source of protein and nutrition for the Indian diet. However, pulses are largely cultivated on rain-fed, degraded lands by resource poor famers. Current levels of production (17-19 million tons) are not keeping pace with demand (22 million tons) and the shortfall is projected to increase over the next five years if concerted action is not taken.
