Food Inflation in India: Implications for Food Security and Policy Options

Inflation poses a great threat to the food and nutrition security of the poor and middle classes in India. Th ere are four main pathways that lead to poor outcomes in nutrition, health, and education of children, arising from the increase in food prices: impact on poverty; macro-economic impact and its eff ect on employment and the social sector; impact on nutrition and social protection programs; and women’s well-being and intra-household decision making.
