Food Security and Undernourishment in India: Assessment of Alternative Norms and the Income Effect

This policy brief attempts to address the problem of hunger and malnutrition in India. The paper sets estimates of undernutrition and malnutrition were prepared for various income groups using the unit level NSSO data for the latest round (66 Round) on Consumer Expenditure for the year 2009­-10. The brief studies prevalence of undernutrition on the basis of Indian Council of Medical Research National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR­NIN) norm as well as FAO norm, whereas the prevalence of malnutrition was estimated based on ICMR­NIN norm only.
