Volatility of Agricultural Prices – An Analysis of Major International and Domestic Markets

The price volatility of agricultural commodities assumes critical importance in the context of the ongoing debate regarding agricultural trade liberalisation in India. The study, using monthly price data, finds little evidence to show that the international agricultural prices are uniformly more variable than the domestic prices. The study shows that the intra-year variability is higher in domestic markets while the inter-year variability is higher in the international markets.
