Migration, Agriculture and Rural Development

Publisher: FAO

Agriculture and rural development (ARD) are key to addressing the root causes of migration. By 2050, over half of the population in the least developed countries will still live in rural areas. Three-quarters of the extreme poor base their livelihoods on agriculture or other rural activities. In Africa alone, 11 million young people will enter the labour market every year for the next decade. Efforts must be geared towards a more productive agricultural sector and improved food systems in general, enabling diversification into manufacturing and services, while also promoting decent work and employment in agribusiness.
